From Darkest Before Dawn
Two years before the war on Pacem Huntington was Dawn's neighbor and friend. He introduced Dawn to his co-worker and new friend, Jacob William Swann. Jacob and Dawn hit it off and quickly became friends. When Dawn found out that Jacob wasn't a Christian she started sharing the Good News with him and soon enough he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. One year later and they started dating, another year and they were engaged. On February 16th Jacob left to fight in the war against Fortis, promising to marry Dawn when he returned. The war ended and Jacob never returned. He was assumed dead by those who remained at home, but in reality he was taken captive along with a few others and held prisoner in Quartz, Fortis.
A year after the war only fourteen prisoners from the war remain and Jacob is one of them. They've been informed they only have two weeks left to live, then they'll be executed. It's two more weeks of captivity and torture, his hopes of ever escaping are finally dwindling.
Dawn is convinced that Jacob is dead. But someone else who's hiding in the city with her knows the truth. He knows Jacob's alive, but hasn't said anything.
